H1N1 (Swine Flu) Virus

H1N1 Weekly Update
Updated: 12/11/2009

Please know that H1N1 flu is clearly now community wide, and we must assume that our students could be exposed to the H1N1 virus anywhere, anytime.  We continue to encourage healthy practices that will help to minimize the impact of H1N1 at school. On each campus, we are vigilant about our cleaning practices and hand sanitizers are available in every classroom, common rooms such as library and computer labs and at numerous locations in the office and health rooms. It is important that you remember to call the school attendance line should your child become ill to report specific information and symptoms so that our attendance clerk does not need to make follow up verification calls.

A web link is in the process of being created  by Yahoo to show state by state where the vaccination centers are located and details of each clinic’s operation. is the best resource we have seen to date in terms of providing information to families about vaccination opportunities

Our H1N1 Committee continues to meet weekly to monitor the flu’s impact on a local level. Given the difficulty of ascertaining which absences are from seasonal flu or other causes and which are directly related to the H1N1 virus, our best point of analysis is a comparison of absence rates specifically for this time of year in our schools over the past three years. Currently, our absences are actually less than past years as we look at a three year trend line. We will include absence information on our web link as well as report current cluster identification as required by the Center for Disease Control ( CDC).  The CDC has developed the following criteria for districts to use:
1)    At least 10% of daily average attendance is absent, OR
2)    20% if classroom or group is ill with similar symptoms, with a minimum of 5 students ill.
To date, the district has filed four cluster reports.  On 11/5/09, a cluster report was filed on behalf of TMS. On 11/4/09, a cluster report was filed on behalf of the High School and on 11/3/09  two cluster reports were filed on behalf of El Morro and Top of the World Elementary Schools.

We believe that providing absence rates and cluster information on our website  as well as any other known H1N1 information as reported by the CDC will provide parents another vehicle for accessing community information  Please continue to keep a close watch on your children(s) temperatures and other early warning signs of illness. Given the importance of this topic, we will continue to update our community each week on the status of the H1N1 flu.  We encourage you to consistently check our website for these regular updates.
