Thurston Middle School was established in 1968. Originally known as Marie Thurston Junior High, the school was built to honor Marie Thurston who was the first principal of Laguna Beach Grade School in 1913 and one of the first teachers in Laguna Beach. Thurston is nestled in the hills between Main Beach and Top of the World. Thurston provides a safe learning environment for approximately 680 students each year.

Thurston was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2009. Our staff is dedicated to creating an outstanding learning environment which includes best first instruction and collaborative teamwork through Professional Learning Communities. Thurston provides rigorous curriculum which is aligned to the California State Standards. Our API scores are high and continue to grow.

Although Thurston has been commended for our high academics, we take great pride in educating the whole child; socially, behaviorally, and academically. We offer a variety of enriching and meaningful elective classes and faculty sponsored clubs. Thurston provides positive reinforcement and support through our SMART and intervention programs.
