LBUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION SELECTS NEW LBUSD SUPERINTENDENT

The LBUSD Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Sherine Smith as the new Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2010.

Board of Education President Ketta Brown shares the enthusiasm of the District, “The LBUSD Board of Education is eager to begin this new chapter in our development with Sherine Smith as our partner. Her depth and breadth of experience in all areas will allow us to continue on our current path to even greater success for our students. She has a quiet grace and genuineness that parents and students will recognize and appreciate. Our past leadership has set the stage for Ms. Smith to take the bold moves that will truly move us from "good to great"!

The selection process for the new superintendent began in February as the Board of Education retained the services of The Cosca Group who assisted in the selection. During February and March, several staff and community input sessions were held with The Cosca Group. The Board received 31 applications for review and in May, reviewed the applications and discussed recommendations with The Cosca Group. Candidate interviews were held later that month and by consensus Ms. Sherine Smith emerged as the strongest candidate.

Currently, Ms. Smith is the Assistant Superintendent, Education and Assessment in Fullerton Joint Union High School District. She provides leadership and support in the areas of curriculum and instruction, assessment, professional development, and special education for seven high schools.

Recently, Ms. Smith served as Deputy Superintendent of Education in Capistrano Unified School District where her primary responsibility was to provide learning-centered leadership and school operations management. In addition, Ms. Smith’s background includes three years as assistant superintendent, secondary education; two years as executive director, secondary education/operations; three years as principal of Capistrano Valley High School, four years as principal of Aliso Viejo Middle School, all in the Capistrano Unified School District, where she began her career as a teacher.

Ms. Smith is looking forward to joining the LBUSD team “I am excited about joining Laguna Beach Unified School District. This district has a long tradition of excellence and community support and I am honored to be selected to lead it. I am passionate about public education and no district does it better than Laguna Beach.”
