Our Vision

Nestled upon a hilltop overlooking the Saddleback Valley to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the South sits an educational community known for the pat 39 years as Top of the World Elementary School, affectionately known as TOW. In today's fast paced society it is refreshing to find a close knit neighborhood school where families walk to school with their children, stop to have a chat with staff, other parents and maybe have a cup of coffee. Staff, parent volunteers, and the principal meet the buses as they drive in each morning and open car doors to greet each student with a warm smile and a "Good Morning". TOW is proud to maintain its hometown feel and instill this sense of community to each and every student.

TOW is located in Laguna Beach, a small town surrounded by the exploding growth of South Orange County, California. TOW is one of two elementary schools, which feed into Thurston Middle School. Families come from areas east of the Pacific Coast Highway and the inland community of Aliso Viejo. The program consists of a special education pre-school and kindergarten through fifth grades. There are currently 561 students enrolled in the school. TOW also maintains a school within a school known as The Community Learning Center (CLC). CLC serves 40 students in grades first through fourth in a small campus adjacent to the main campus. The CLC approaches the curriculum from a holistic worldview centering on peace and a community spirit. This program is an extension of the overall philosophy of TOW.

TOW's academic program emphasizes a strong commitment to the core subjects and academic rigor balanced with enrichment programs that foster a well-rounded student experience. TOW adopted the Harcourt Brace series five years agos which encompasses all grade levels. We are currently entering our fifth year of using the Open Court English/Language Arts (ELA) adoption that also provides a consistent ELA program across all grade levels. TOW exhibits the quality of the academic program in its API score. The API score for the 2006  testing period is 914. We continue to score at or above the Statewide Performance Target of 800. The Beckman Science program provides an exciting hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum. Social Studies completes the well -rounded core curriculum. In addition to the rigorous core curriculum TOW emphasizes the arts in education in a variety of enrichment programs. Students learn about famous artists and create their own works of art based on the artist's style in our very popular Art Masters Program. This year students are learning about the life of composer Sergi Prokofiev through a series of assemblies sponsored by the Pacific Symphony. This Class Act Program helps instill an appreciation for classical music from the earliest grades through fifth grade. TOW also participates in a series of assemblies that emphaize the cultural arts sponsored by the Orange County Perfroming Arts Center Educational Foundation. A wide variety of educational field trips for each grade level ranges from an overnight trip aboard the Brig Pilgrim, related to the social sciene curriculum, to going back in time with a historical visit to the Kellogg Historical House Museum.

To extend the opportunity for students to thrive, TOW has developed a comprehensive after school program available to all students in grades 1-5. The PTA sponsors the after school program and provides scholarships to any student who needs assistance. At this time, over 70% of TOW students participate in the after school program which includes classes such as Garden Club, Academic Chess, Chorus, Story Telling, Art, Mad Science, Digital Animation, Digital Filmaking, Guitar, Violin, Drums, Computer Club, Drama, Musical Minds and many more. There is truly something for everyone in the after school program.

What makes TOW unique is the strong community spirit. Parent volunteers are present in classrooms in an incredible show of support for their children. Last year over 28,000 hours were donated to our school. TOW is a school where students truly know that they are nurtured and supported by all the adults in their lives.

Chipper's Corner

Chipper's question for this week is " How can we make TOW a greener school?"

Here are a few of our students answers;

Dear Chipper,

I have some ideas for going green. We should compost. That will make our soil be healthy. Also, we should sort trash.

Charles - Grade 2

Dear Chipper,

I have some ideas about how to make our school greener. Throw out trash in the right trash can and to compost more. And recycle bottles and paper.

Kelly - Grade 2

Dear Chipper,

I think TOW should make students bring re-usable bottles for water and juice. Well, I have my own metal bottle that I bring to school every day. The Coaches should give dolphin cards when they have re-usable bottles. I think that plastic bottles are a waste of plastic. I think that we will have a cleaner world if people do not use plastic bottles.

Caterina - Grade 2

Dear Chipper,

I hope you are doing well.

Going green does not mean celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Going green means we should not throw away anything reusable. We should recycle.

Recycling paper is when a factory turns used paper into brand new paper so we don't cut down any more trees. Trees are very important Chipper.

Marccon - 2nd grade

Dear Chipper,

There are a lot of ways to make our school go green. That we start putting the paper in the paper bin, and plastic in the plastic bin is one way. The the student council doesn't have to sort it out. Another way we can make our school go green is to make sure that at lunch our food and trash gets thrown away. And that is how we can make TOW go green.

Clay - 2nd grade

Dear Chipper,

I think it is great that you wnat the school to go green. We can use solar powereed landscape lights and path lights. We should alway use post consumer recycled paper products in the office. We can also use this kind of recycled paper in the bathrooms. Also, we should use electrict water heaters that only turn on when hot water is needed. All these things will save energy and help TOW!

Miles - 2nd Grade

Dear Chipper,

I think TOW should go green and do some things differently. One thing I thought of is synthetic grass on the field. I also thought of instead of paper and pencil games we could use markers and laminate the paper. Another idea I had is instead of ziplocks use sandwich containers. Last, I think we should use sky lights instead of regular lights. those are my ideas about TOW going green.

Lauren - 2nd grade

Dear Chipper,

1. Use waterless urinals (boys)

2. Put lights on timers.

3. Use both sides of the paper.

4. Use canvas bags instead of plastic. We can also make TOW bags. Chipper, did you know that LA County uses 6 billion bags a year? That is 1 bag for every person on the whole planet! Every person can make a difference. Let's do it!!!

Dylan - 2nd grade

Dear Chipper,

I have lots of idea's on how TOW can "go green". We could recycle all the ink cartridges. We could also put our food scrapes into a compost pile. We can recycle all the plastic water bottles. If we all pitch in we can make a difference.

Kate - 2nd grade

Dear Chipper,

I have a few ideas on how TOW can go green. First, all students should be better at recycling bottles and cans. Second, all classrooms should have a recycle bin for paper. Third, all students should tell their parents to recycle batteries. Saving our environment is important and TOW can make a difference.

Erom - 2nd grade

How to go green,

Just a choice to bring smaller cans so you can drink faster. Or bring a drink that you started at home. So recycle cans, paper and bottles! RECYCLE!

Alden - 2nd grade
