Newsweek magazine named 31 Orange County high schools among the best public high schools in the nation in the publication's annual ranking released late Sunday.
No. 19 Oxford Academy in Cypress ranked as the best school in California. Troy High in Fullerton was the second-highest ranking school in the county, placing No. 121 on the overall list.
The nation's top-ranked school was Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky.
This is the second year the magazine used a new weighted formula developed to emphasize graduation and college-going rates, as well as SAT, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exam scores. The previous formula considered only the number of AP and IB exams taken.
Oxford ranked seventh nationally in the U.S. News and World Report ranking of high schools released earlier this month. That magazine's ranking uses a two-tiered ranking. First, the magazine's research partner examines how well schools perform on state tests, including the performance of student groups that typically score lower, such as low-income and Hispanic students.
The campus also placed first in the Register's annual rating of local public high schools released in December.
Oxford, a seventh- through 12th-grade magnet, pulls in an equal number of high-performing students from throughout the Anaheim Union High School District. Last year, 99 percent of students graduated eligible to attend University of California or California State University campuses. Every student at Oxford was also enrolled in at least one AP class.
Oxford was actually unranked in last year's Newsweek report because school officials failed to complete a survey requesting specific data
At No. 148, Irvine's University High was the third-highest ranked county school. The three other Irvine Unified high schools all made the ranking, including Northwood High at No. 159, Irvine High at 221 and Woodbridge High at 630.
The Newsweek report was released at 1 a.m. Monday eastern time, or 10 p.m. Sunday pacific time.
