LBUSD Press Release,July 19, 2012: Laguna Beach High School Receives Full 6-Year WASC Accreditation

The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education isvery pleased to announce that the Western Association of Schools and Colleges(WASC) Accrediting Commission for Schools granted Laguna Beach High School afull six-year term of accreditation with a midterm review expiring June 18,2018. WASC is one of six regionalaccrediting associations in the United States responsible for accreditingpublic and private schools in California, Hawaii, and several Pacific Islandterritories.
Visiting Committee Chairperson Harlan E. Lyso noted thisaction was taken following a “careful study of the Visiting Committee Report,which noted the many laudable aspects of the school.” Mr. Lyso’s letter congratulated Dr.Culverhouse “on the quality of instruction being offered in your school.”
Dr.Joanne Culverhouse explained the LBHS staff developed an Action Plan focusingon two goals: Best First Instruction and Meetingthe Academic and Social Needs of All Students. Each of these goals is aligned to the District’s StrategicGoal 1: Student Achievement—All StudentsWill Demonstrate Growth Across Content Areas. She expanded on Mr. Lyso’s letter noting the results of theaccreditation are “a reflection of a hard working, fully committed, andinvested staff paired with great teacher leadership by Co-coordinators AlondaHartford and Mark Alvarez during the 2-year self-study.”
Dr.Culverhouse elaborated her staff is looking forward to continuing thesystematic implementation of the Action Plan when everyone returns to start thenew school year.
SuperintendentSherine Smith stated, “On behalf of the LBUSD Board of Education, Icongratulate Dr. Culverhouse and the staff of LBHS. The outstanding accreditation is a reflectionof their passion and commitment to students.”
