School Climate, including measures of perceptions of safety, engagement, connectedness, and more, are essential components of optimal conditions for learning. We strive to evaluate and improve student experiences and creating an environment where students can thrive every day. We measure school climate in a variety of ways. Two primary ways are through the California Healthy Kids Survey and completion of an annual Hanover School Climate Survey.
The California Department of Education sponsors the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) that helps the LBUSD and community health agencies promote better health among our youth. The survey gathers anonymous student information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning; school safety; and health-related concerns such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; and risk of depression.
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is voluntary and students are not required to complete the survey. Students who participate only have to answer the questions they want to answer and they may stop taking it at any time. The CHKS is anonymous. No names will be recorded or attached to the survey forms or data. The results will be made available only under strict confidentiality controls. The survey was most recently administered in late January or early February, 2018.
