Social Emotional Learning Screening

What are the goals of the Universal Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screening?

The use of universal social-emotional learning screenings helps us to:

  • Provide data-informed and responsive supports to students to increase positive student outcomes, including achievement, attendance, subjective well-being, positive peer relationships and positive decision-making;
  • Measure the overall effectiveness of our prevention and intervention services K-12, including the effectiveness of curriculum to meet our students’ needs; and
  • Guide professional development priorities for teachers, staff, and administrators.

Will the outcomes be part of my student’s permanent records? Where will the record be stored?

The universal social emotional learning screening data represents a snapshot of information at a moment in time. We will maintain the student level information for the current school year for progress monitoring. The data for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade is maintained on our secure assessment system, Illuminate Education. The data for 4th-12th grade Kelvin Pulse surveys are confidential and anonymous, unless a student self-selects that they would like to see a counselor. Non-student specific identifying aggregate data will be maintained within the Instructional Services department at the District Office indefinitely for use in school and district climate analysis and program evaluation at the site and district levels.

Who will have access to the information on student outcomes of the screener?

Grades K-3: Student privacy is a priority. On the Student Risk Screening Scale (K-3), individuals with access to student level information will be a student’s credentialed teacher, credentialed school counselor, school psychologist, and site principal. Additionally, district level credentialed administrators within the Instructional Services department will have access to student level information. Additionally, parents will be notified by the school counselor in the event that a student’s ratings require further follow up.

Grades 4-12: Student privacy is a priority. On the Kelvin Pulse Surveys (4-12), student specific results are anonymous and confidential, unless a student requests to speak with a counselor. Aggregate, non-student specific information are available to administrators and counseling staff to measure school-wide change over time. Additionally, district level credentialed administrators within the Instructional Services department will have access to student level information.

Will I receive a copy of the outcomes?

Grades K-3: Parents/Guardians of students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade will be notified if their child has been identified within an elevated risk category. The screening instrument is one tool to measure individual student support needs and school wide progress. You will not receive scores if your child’s scores falls within the low or no risk range. A school counselor will follow up with you if your child is identified as demonstrating elevated risk. We will not provide any additional supplementary services without first receiving your informed consent.

Grades 4-12: Parents/Guardians of students in 4th-12th grade will not receive student-specific results as the Kelvin Pulse Surveys are anonymous, unless a student self-selects to speak with a counselor. In the event that a student seeks additional counseling support, a school counselor will connect with the student's parent/guardian to discuss relevant supports.

How do I opt my child out of participation?

Participation in the universal social emotional health is available to all students attending LBUSD schools in grades K-12. Parents of students in grades K-5 provide consent through the Aeries Authorization process during the Data Confirmation/Authorization process in August. Parents of students in 6-12 may opt your child out of participation in writing by completing the online opt-out form provided to parents/guardians during the Aeries Data Confirmation/Authorization Process. Please note, if you are opting multiple students out of participation you will need to fill out one form for each child.
