Independent Study

Recent legislation, Assembly Bill 130, requires districts to offer a long-term yearlong Independent Study (IS) program for students whose health would be put at risk during the 2021-22 school year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

To help meet the needs of LBUSD students, we plan to partner with the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) this year to offer a virtual learning option for families within these new independent study program requirements, along with our full-time in-person academic program. The virtual learning instructional program will be offered through OCDE’s Community Home Education Program (CHEP) for our TK-8 students, and through enrollment at Pacific Coast High School (PCHS) for our 9-12 grade students. The OCDE independent study and distance learning programs provide a level of expertise and personalization that has been developed over 20+ years.

An informational webinar to review the Independent Study program instructional models available through both CHEP and PCHS was held on August 11. Families are welcome to review the recording. If you are interested in enrolling your student in Independent Study for the 2021-2022 school year, please complete the Independent Study Interest Form.  Following the webinar, LBUSD staff will schedule individual conferences with interested families to provide guidance regarding enrollment procedures and to review program expectations. After that time, CHEP and PCHS team members will work with families to develop written agreements and learning plans prior to the first day of instruction.
